THE FADER MAGAZINE
1999 — 2003
Lifting the name from a Gang Starr lyric (“peace out Premier, take me out with the fader”), the original intention in creating the magazine was for it to serve as a trade periodical for the music business, with its primary focus on the DJ culture that I was immersed in at the time. That idea evolved rapidly with each issue — and with each new addition to the fledgling staff — and by the early aughts the magazine had gained traction as a wide-ranging lifestyle publication known for covering vital subcultures and championing new music. A stellar cast of contributing photographers provided, through their images, a vibrancy and a cachet that were crucial to the new title gaining a foothold culturally and commercially. Two decades later, the print periodical and website remain key touchstones for youth culture and emerging artists.
